Welcome!

Dear Neighbors, Thank you for visiting my page!

I am excited to announce my candidacy for the position of Mayor for our beloved community, Greenfield, MN and to ask for your vote.

Every once in a while, there comes a time when we are asked to step out of our comfort zones and serve something larger than ourselves. I have enjoyed my time of service to this community both on the planning commission and on the City Council. When our current Mayor Brad Johnson told me his plans to retire from the seat and asked me to run for Mayor, I felt that was one of those times. I was humbled and honored that he would ask. Our city has come a long way since he took office in 2011 and maintaining what he and others on the various city councils have developed is a mantle that will fall to whomever is elected this November. I believe I am up to the task and the best candidate for this position.

I have been a resident of Greenfield since 2011 and have actively participated in the community since then. I grew up in northwestern Minnesota, lived in a rural area down a minimum maintenance road, came from a long line of farmers, and raised and showed livestock as a youth. So, I deeply appreciate our way of life in Greenfield, and I understand what this community is about. Having put myself through college and raised a young family on one income, I know all too well the importance of frugality. I’ve had a successful career in the Laboratory and Healthcare construction industry, so I also understand the importance of appropriate planning for reasonable and beneficial growth. And having the pleasure of meeting so many of you over the years, I now know my work ethic and personal values align with the core values of this community and those of you I know well.

As a Council member I have always kept the needs of the community 1st. I have said what I would do and have done what I have said. As Mayor I will be the same, direct, honest individual who will only do what is in the best interest of this community. A good example of that is when folks started working and going to school from home during COVID. Many did not have access to internet services that were fast enough for their needs. I spearheaded the effort to create and lead a taskforce made up of volunteers from our community to solve this issue. It resulted in a city-wide deployment of high-speed fiber optics direct to our homes. The initial rollout hit 95% of the community. This was not good enough, we continued to work with Midco to get 100% coverage of our city. This was done without any city tax dollar investment.

I do hope you will honor me with your vote on November 5th. I will be campaigning door to door in the coming days, and I hope to speak with you then. Until that time, if you have any questions or wish to discuss anything with me, please do not hesitate to call or email me.

Sincerely, Kyal

  • I was raised in northwest Minnesota (Crookston area) on a farm. I raised and showed livestock as a youth.
  • My grandparents were lifelong farmers in North Dakota and I spent many summers on the farm helping out and operating the equipment for harvest.
  • I moved to the Twin Cities in 1995 to go to the University of Minnesota, where I completed my Bachelor of Science degree.
  • My wife Michele and I just celebrated our 16th wedding anniversary.
  • We moved to Greenfield in 2011 to care in-home for Michele’s two aging parents and made Greenfield our forever home.
  • Our two sons, Cameron (28) and Jameson (26), are now young adults and we enjoy when our three grandkids come out to Greenfield home to enjoy country life.
  • I’m head coach of the Rockford High School Trap team and enjoy working with local kids in grades 7-12.
  • Each year I lead a service project through Hearts and Hammers, a charitable organization that works to keep older adults in their homes by providing free exterior repair, house painting, and much needed maintenance.
  • We have thoroughly enjoyed immersing ourselves in our community through public service and volunteer work and this is where we will retire.

My Vision for Greenfield

  • Continue to keep Greenfield as a safe community to raise your families. Working with Law Enforcement, Fire, and community organizations to ensure we are well prepared for anything that comes our way.
  • Maintain the rural character of the community as it continues to grow and evolve.
  • Encourage development of business and industry in the appropriate zoning districts as outlined in the comprehensive plan.
  • Continue the legacy of my predecessor in maintaining a city that is there to serve its residents, respectful in its discourse, and reactive to the future needs of the community.
  • Champion our elected officials to make sure our state and county taxes are not just spent outside of our community.
  • Maintain an eagle eye on the city budget to ensure the community gets the best value for every tax dollar spent.

Endorsements

“Kyal has proven leadership qualities and a clear vision for the city, which is consistent with the character of Greenfield. He listens to all sides and makes decisions based on what is best for the city as a whole, not only what a person or small group wants."

-Brad Johnson (current mayor)

“When Kyal joined the council, it was quickly apparent that he could be counted on to make reasoned and informed decisions. The council relied on him to have the facts, pro and con, on any issue. This is the quality leadership we need in our next mayor.”

-Tom Cook (former council member)
